AS THE OLYMPICS BEGIN, PAY ATTENTION TO ATHLETES’ PERFORMANCE, NOT THEIR BODIES
July 26, 2024
“When you're competing at such a high level, it can be really enticing to do anything and everything to be the best that you can be, and so thinking about the qualities that make someone a very good athlete can also make them really successful in their eating disorder unfortunately,” Daley said. “Just because it's an Olympian doesn't mean they're immune to mental health concerns or issues – maybe there's pressure from a coach to be a certain weight or pressure from sports that there's a certain body type that maybe needs to be achieved; there might just be high intrinsic pressure from perfectionism and just wanting to really do everything to be the best they can be.”
COLORADO PUBLIC RADIO INTERVIEW FOR ATHLETE EDGE AT EDCARE

“I think we forget that eating disorders are a mental health diagnosis. And so there's a huge psychological component that oftentimes has physical repercussions. And so it's something you really can't tell that someone is struggling with just by looking at them.
We often look at athletes as like the peak and like at the pinnacle of health potentially. And that is not always the case. You never know what someone is dealing with underneath that.”
WHY I WATCHED 'AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS: DALLAS COWBOY CHEERLEADERS' WITH MY TWEEN
July 19, 2024
Kate Daley, MA, LPCC, RDN, a primary therapist for Athlete EDGE at EDCare suggests reframing comments by celebrating what the athletes' bodies are capable of doing to help shift the focus to ability rather than aesthetics.
“Weight and body composition are two of at least 40 factors that influence sports performance, so identifying and discussing other critical factors displayed in the show like resilience, dedication, and commitment to training can help young girls recognize that performance is dependent on so much more than how their body looks,” she explains.

KATE DALEY: MY (UN)CONVENTIONAL COMEBACK STORY
January 7, 2024
"While I remember my eating disorder showing up before I became a competitive long-distance runner, it was amplified by the bodies I observed around me. The ones that lined up next to me, stood on the podium beside me, and with those I had both friendships and rivalries. My eyes saw thin bodies, thinner than mine. And so, in an effort to be the best I could be, I worked as hard as I could to be the smallest I could be. I deeply believed that would equate to being the fastest I could be. Instead, it left me chronically injured, depressed, and anxious that my mind and body would never recover."
